This is the third article in my four-part series exploring the different "types" of each color season. Now it?s Autumn's turn.
I love Autumn and always look forward to the cooler weather and the spectacular fall colors. It?s a time when the trees show off their crowning glory of gold, orange and rust leaves before turning brown.
These rich and earthy colors are represented in the Autumn color seasons used in seasonal color analysis.
Seasonal color analysis is the process of matching your natural coloring to a set of colors called a color season that?s in harmony with you.
Once you determine your color season, you know with confidence the colors to wear to look your best.
Now let?s explore the Autumn color seasons which are warm, soft and deep.
Are You an Autumn?
Autumns have a warm or neutral to slightly warm skin tone and can be fair to dark. Your hair color can be golden blonde to dark brown and auburn. Your eyes are warm and can be brown, green, hazel or golden.
All Autumns do not look alike since they have different dominant color traits of warm, soft or deep.
True Autumn, the original Autumn color season, along with Warm Autumn, Soft Autumn and Deep Autumn are the 4 Autumn season types in the 16-season method of seasonal color analysis.
Each of the Autumn types has a unique color palette with variations of the traditional Autumn colors to fit the dominant trait in their coloring.
The Four Autumn Color Seasons
True Autumn
True Autumn is the main Autumn season. True Autumn has traits that are warm, soft and deep. Each color dimension is balanced and not overly warm, extremely soft or very deep.
The True Autumn color palette is warm, medium to dark, and toasted which is mixed with brown. True Autumn colors are the golden and earthy colors found in nature like in autumn leaves. They are neither too bright nor too muted.
Neutrals include ecru, golden tans, camel, all shades of brown, and warm navy. Accent colors include peach, apricot, gold, mustard, oranges, rust, mossy greens, olives, warm blues, teals, and deep plums.
Not sure which Autumn season fits you best, then stick with the True Autumn colors which will be flattering.
Warm Autumn
Warm Autumn is the warmest and brightest Autumn season. It?s Autumn mixed with the brightness of Spring.
A Warm Autumn?s dominant trait is warmth. A Warm Autumn has hair, skin and eyes that are warm and golden, often with red hair and freckles. Your features are warm and vibrant.
You look brighter than a typical Autumn, but you will look softer and more earthy than a Spring.
The Warm Autumn color palette is golden, warm, clear to slightly toasted and medium to dark. It?s a brighter version of the True Autumn colors.
These vibrant colors are the very warmest of the Autumn color palette, with the addition of more golden shades. The colors are still touched with brown, but they are not as subdued as the True Autumn colors.
Neutrals include cream, golden tans, all shades of brown and warm navy. Accent colors include gold, peach, coral, apricot, oranges, rust, warm greens, aqua, warm blues, and warm purple.
Soft Autumn
Soft Autumn is the lightest, gentlest and toned Autumn season. It?s Autumn blended with the coolness and softness of Summer with a neutral to slightly warm undertone.
A Soft Autumn?s dominant trait is softness. A Soft Autumn will look softer and may look lighter than a True Autumn. Your features are more neutral than other Autumns, but you will look warmer than a Summer.
The Soft Autumn color palette is neutral to moderately warm, muted, and light to medium. It?s a lighter, more neutral and muted variation of the True Autumn colors.
Summer?s influence gives the Autumn colors a more muted quality and lightens them, so they resemble the colors of faded fallen leaves. Since the colors are touched with grey and brown, the golden browns are removed and warm grey and other muted colors are added.
Neutrals are cream, bone, warm tans, light browns, warm grey, and warm navy. Accent colors include peach, salmon, toasted coral, light rust, soft gold, warm reds, soft burgundy, muted plum, soft blues, teals, and sage green.
Deep Autumn
Deep Autumn, also called Dark Autumn, is the darkest Autumn season. It?s Autumn combined with the brightness and coolness of Winter with a neutral to slightly warm undertone.
A Deep Autumn?s dominant trait is depth. A Deep Autumn?s coloring is dark and rich and looks darker and more neutral than a typical Autumn.
Deep Autumns may be mistaken for Winters, because you are either very dark or high contrast compared to other Autumns. But you look warmer and softer than a Winter.
The Deep Autumn color palette is neutral to warm and primarily dark colors. It?s a darker and more neutral version of the True Autumn colors.
The colors are the most pigmented of the Autumn family, which I call the Autumn jewel tones. All the colors become darker and richer by shading with either brown or black. This palette has cooler versions of red, blue, purple and green introduced than the other Autumn seasons.
Neutrals include oyster, taupe white, beige, charcoal grey, navy, mahogany, dark chocolate, brown-black and warm black. Accent colors include bright yellow, warm coral, bright reds, burgundy, teals, deep blues, dark greens, plum, and dark purple.
Comparing the Autumn Seasons
The Autumn seasons are all warm and soft, but they look different.
Looking at the Autumn examples and their seasonal color palettes you can clearly see the differences in the four Autumn seasons and how the dominant trait relates to the colors.
Your coloring is unique. Don?t worry if one of your features differs from the general descriptions, as you may still fit the color season.
