Welcome to the last post in this Discover Your Style series.
Today is focused on cleaning out what?s not working, organizing what you have and creating a plan to curate a wardrobe that represents your style.
This may be the last challenge but curating your wardrobe will be a process. It will take several seasons to replace your clothing to create a wardrobe that you truly love.
Be patient, shop with intention and stay the course, my friend.
Closet Cleanse
Before you can create the wardrobe of your dreams, you need to know what you have that works.
To do this, you need to clean out your closet and evaluate what you have.
It?s a big job, so split it up over several days or do it on a weekend. If you have a huge closet packed with clothes and the task is overwhelming, then evaluate the clothes for this season and tackle the rest when the weather changes.
It?s best to take everything out of your closet. Yes, every single thing!
While your closet is empty, give it a good cleaning before putting anything back in.
Evaluation
As you evaluate your clothes, sort them into these piles.
1. Keep
2. Keep, but needs attention
3. Purge
4. Replace
Clothes to Keep
Be selective. Make sure the clothes you keep are things that you love, wear regularly, fit, look flattering on you and fit your personal style. You should look forward to wearing these keepers.
Clothes that Need Attention
Clothes that are keepers, but they need alterations, mending or cleaned. Make it a priority to get these items ready to wear.
Clothes to Purge
Clothes that don?t make the cut and items you simply don?t wear. Get rid of any clothes that don?t fit, are the wrong color, are not flattering or does not fit your style.
Decide if you want to sell them, donate them or give them to friends. Get your trash bags ready to pack them up.
It should feel good to get rid of things you don?t love, wear or need.
Clothes to Replace
This pile is the clothes that are close, but not 100% what you want now. Maybe the color, fit or style is not quite right. Clothes you like, but don?t love. Clothes that need to be replaced or upgraded.
You need to be practical about your closet cleanse. You can?t get rid of everything since you need some clothes to wear now. Since it will take time to shop for items that fit you perfectly, you may need to keep some ?close enough? items until you can replace them.
Keep these items only until you find better replacements.
Closet Organization
Your closet should be your happy place filled with the clothes that you love and are excited to wear. It should be organized so things are easy to see and find.
An organized closet will spark your creativity and make getting dressed easier.
Reserve your closet for clothes and accessories. Find a home for other things like gifts, wrapping paper and old school yearbooks, somewhere else.
Invest in what you need to keep your closet space neat and tidy.
First, sort your clothing and accessories by category to see what you have and what you need to store them.
Replace your hangers! They will last for years and are worth the investment. I use velvet hangers for tops and jackets and wood hangers for jeans and pants.
Having the same hangers will allow your clothes to hang uniformly and will make your closet space beautiful. Return those wire hangers to the cleaners.
Hang your clothing by type and color with all tops together, jackets together, and pants together.
When you?re done, it?s going to feel amazing, look beautiful and be functional.
Create a Wardrobe Inventory
After you have all your clothes hung neatly in your closet, take time to inventory what you have that you love.
Only write down your keepers that will be staying in your curated wardrobe. Do not include the items you want to replace since they are not going to be a part of your new wardrobe.
Write down your items organized by color. I group items by neutrals and accent colors.
Most clients have trouble with the inventory process, so I created a printable Wardrobe Planner to help. It has 15 worksheets to help with your closet cleanse, inventorying your wardrobe, planning outfits and so much more. You can download it to get started today.
Complete Your Shopping List
You need a shopping list to keep you on track when you?re shopping. It should include things you love, things you need to replace and things you need for your wardrobe to function better.
Things You Love
Pull out your shopping list that you made in Part 3 with the list of items you love but were missing from your current wardrobe. Review your list and write all the details to describe what you?re shopping for.
Things You Need to Replace
Add the items that you need to replace or upgrade to your shopping list. These will be the items from your ?replace? pile.
Be specific about what you are wanting. Instead of writing new jeans, write dark wash high rise slim straight leg jeans so you have clear direction when shopping.
Things You Need to Function Better
You need to add the clothes and accessories to your shopping list to make your wardrobe work better for you.
When you have your inventory sheets filled in, you can see your wardrobe gaps or what key pieces are missing.
Think about how you will wear your clothing and the items you need to complete your outfits.
? Maybe you have brown pants and jacket, but no shoes to wear with them.
? Maybe you need a new light tank to wear under your cardigans and jackets.
When your shopping list is complete, prioritize the items.
When you go shopping, focus on what you really need and what you really love. Shop with intention and stick to the items on your list. Don?t settle for ok anymore!
When you finish this challenge, you will have a beautiful, organized closet, a wardrobe inventory to build on and a detailed list to shop for as you curate your wardrobe.
Creating a dream wardrobe with the things that you love will be a process that you will continue during your lifetime.
As you go, be pleased with the progress that you make. Remember, it?s not about the finish line, it?s about your self-discovery journey.
Commit to the process, continue the journey and stay true to yourself. Be sure to share your progress in my Facebook group for encouragement.
