Today, let?s talk about your hair color.
To Color or Not
To color or not is a personal choice. When you go grey, you can embrace it or color it. Your natural hair color will always harmonize with your coloring because it?s natural.
However, if you choose to color or highlight your hair, then this article will give you 3 simple tips for choosing a flattering hair color.
Evaluate Your Current Color
When you color your hair, choosing the right shade is important! Since your hair frames your face, you want a color that flatters your complexion and complements your skin.
Many people have a hair color that makes them look dull, washed out, or older because the color does not align with their natural coloring.
Is your hair color making you look washed out and dull? Just look in the mirror and see.
Here are four tell-tale signs that your hair color is not doing you any favors.
? Do you notice your hair color before your face?
? Does your skin look pale and washed out?
? Is there a significant color difference between your natural eyebrows and your hair?
? Is your hair color different from your natural hair color during your life?
If you answered yes to the questions above, then your hair color is not the right shade for you.
Wearing more makeup is not the solution, instead choose a hair color that?s in harmony with your coloring.
3 Tips to Find a Flattering Hair Color
To find a flattering hair color, take clues from Mother Nature by looking at your skin, your eyebrows and your natural hair color.
1. Match Your Skin?s Undertone
Your undertone is the subtle color beneath the surface of your skin which is the key to finding your most flattering colors.
??????????????To learn more about your skin?s undertone, download my free Color Analysis Guide or check out my other posts about Color Analysis for guidance.
Cool skin tones look best with cool hair colors and warm skin tones look best with warm hair colors.
?????????????????????Some hair stylists will tell you to keep your hair color undertone opposite of your skin tone, but this will not be flattering on your complexion. Since the color of your hair reflects on your face, you want a shade that complements you to look your best.
If you?re cool, a hair color that?s too warm will make your skin look ruddy or overly pink or red. Your skin imperfections will also look more noticeable.
If you?re warm, a hair color that?s too cool will wash out your skin tone, making it look grey and dull.
??????????????????2. Blend with Your Eyebrows
Since your eyebrows are a focal point on your face, use them as a gauge for your hair color. A good rule of thumb is to choose a base hair color within 3 shades of your natural brow color for a soft contrast between your skin and hair.
A hair color that?s too dark will look harsh and a hair color that?s too light will wash out your complexion.
Instead, choose your base color based on your eyebrows, then add highlights or lowlights for brightness and depth.
3. Relate to Your Natural Hair Color
When you?re looking for a hair color, consider your natural hair color from your past. Dig up an old baby photo or a snapshot from your teens. Does that hair color look amazing on you? If so, try a version of that color now.
If you had extremely dark hair but your hair has now lightened, take a hint from Mother Nature and try a lighter shade of the color from your youth. The dark hair may be too dark and harsh for your lighter coloring now.
However, in choosing your hair color, you do need some contrast between your skin and hair so experiment with different shades.
Hair Color Examples
Your hair color has a huge impact on how you look. Let?s look at some examples since seeing is believing.
Hair Color Too Different
My hair was light blonde as a child before turning ash blonde in my teens. Now that it?s mostly grey, I chose a blonde to match my undertone, flatter my complexion, and blend with my eyebrows that relates to a hair color in my youth.
Here's some different hair colors using Garnier?s Hair Color tool. Do you see the difference hair color can make?
The warm red and dark hair colors are not flattering since they do not relate to my coloring and are just too different from my natural hair color.
Hair Color Too Dark
A hair color that?s too dark will look harsh and stark against your complexion.
You can see in these examples that the lighter hair color complements their skin tone and looks more natural.
Hair Color Too Light
A hair color that?s too light will wash out your skin tone and distract from your natural beauty.
In these examples, the blonde hair does not relate to their eyebrows or natural coloring. They look more vibrant with darker hair.
