Everything You Need to Know to Find the Perfect Pair

According to style experts, the skinny jean has been replaced with a style less clingy and more relaxed: the straight-leg jean.

Here?s what you need to know to find the perfect pair of straight leg jeans.

What are Straight Leg Jeans?

The straight leg jean has a straight up and down cut that is not tapered at the lower leg and does not hug your calves and ankles.

They come in different rises and fits so you can choose the jeans that flatter your body shape best.

? They can be low rise, mid-rise, or high rise.

? They can be straight cut starting from the hip, thigh or knee.

? They can be baggy, relaxed fit, or slim fit.

Choose the Right Rise

The rise on jeans is the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband in the front of the jeans. Choose your best rise based on your body shape and type.

High Rise

High-rise jeans will hit above the belly button and will measure over 10 inches. They are a good option if you?re tall with a long torso.

??????????????????????

They can be very flattering since they have more support and fit snugly across the midsection. This lock and load approach can be the solution for those with a large midsection.

Mid-Rise

Mid-rise is the most popular choice. A medium rise will hit between the hips and belly button and usually measures 9 to 11 inches.

If you?re short-waisted or have a short torso, the medium rise may be for you. It?s not as constricting as a high rise. Depending on your body shape, this rise may be creating undesirable bulges.

Low Rise

Low-rise jeans have a rise of about 7 to 8 inches and a waistband that sits below your waist or just above your hip bones depending on your torso length. Those that are tall and thin can rock this style the best.

Choose the Right Waistband

In addition to the rise, you need to choose the right type of waistband.

Since most women gain weight in their midsection after a certain age, a regular waistband may be too tight and not your best option anymore. If you have weight fluctuations or problems with your tummy being pushed over the top of your jeans, then consider an elastic waistband.

I?m not talking about jeans with baggy waistbands that look like sweatpants.

Jeans now come in pull on styles with flat smooth waistbands that stretch to fit your waistline. These slimming waistbands are flattering on everyone.

When I tried pull on jeans, not only were they more comfortable ? they were also more flattering!

????????????????????

Traditional waistbands were too tight on me and created a muffin top. But the elastic waistbands stretch to accommodate my waist, minimize any lumps and create a smoother silhouette.

If you struggle with weight issues too, I hope you try them.

Choose the Right Fit

Straight leg jeans come in a variety of fits which create different silhouettes.

Baggy Straight

Straight leg jeans can fall straight down from the hips with wide legs. These oversized, wide-leg jeans can look baggy and may not be your most flattering look.

When trying on these jeans, look to see if they are adding extra visual weight to your frame. Usually those that are thinner can wear these wider leg jeans better than others.

Relaxed Fit Straight

Straight leg jeans can fit the hips then fall straight down from the thigh creating a relaxed look. This cut can help to balance the hips to create a flattering silhouette. This style can be great for those with thick legs and calves who are not able to wear a slim cut.

Slim Straight

My favorite jeans are slim straight leg jeans. They fit the hips and thighs and fall straight down from the knee. They are slim but do not cling to your calves.

You really can?t go wrong with a slim straight leg jean as a chic option that looks good on everyone.

?????????????????

If you?re used to wearing skinny jeans, try a slim straight leg since the leg style will be just slightly bigger than what you?re used to. It?s an easy transition to make.

Test Before You Try

When you?re shopping for jeans, try this neat trick to judge the width of the legs before you try them on. Lay the jeans flat. Then fold the hem up to the knee to compare the difference in widths, repeat for the thigh and hip. This will help you see how wide the legs are.

Choose the Right Length

Straight leg jeans can stop anywhere from the top to the bottom of your ankle. Let the hem graze the top of your foot to create a longer leg line and make you look taller.

Avoid jeans that are too long and cause bunching.

Choose the Right Hanger

Keeping your jeans in your closet makes them easier to access. I hang my jeans on durable heavy wooden hangers, since plastic and velvet hangers often break from the weight. I use these for all my pants because the round bar doesn't leave creases or lines. They are a great investment that will last for years.

??????????????????Top Tips

?????????????????????Here?s my top tips for straight leg jeans that are flattering and comfortable.

? Choose the rise for your body shape that does not create lumps and bumps.

? Select a wide flat elastic waistband for maximum comfort.

? Choose a wash or color that blends with your color palette.

? Choose a flattering cut for your body shape.

? Avoid styles that feel shapeless or add excess bulk and width to your body.

Since skinny jeans were not flattering on me, I?ve been wearing slim straight leg jeans for years and I love them.
