Don?t underestimate the power of a great lipstick! Adding color to your lips can make a huge difference in how you look by brightening your face. Since the wrong shade of lipstick can destroy your whole look, it?s important to choose a lipstick that flatters you.
There?s no formula for finding the perfect shade of lipstick, but you should use your undertone as a guide.
If you have a warm undertone, look for a shade of lipstick in warm colors.
If you have a cool undertone, look for cool shades of lipstick.
A neutral undertone can wear a wide range of shades as long as the color is not overly warm or overly cool.
If you already have a color palette provided with your personal color analysis, you know your undertone, intensity, and the colors that flatter you.
Use your color palette as a guide to find lip colors that complement your seasonal colors. Look for lip colors that are similar or that blend with the colors in your color palette.

Let?s look at some examples of lipstick for the color seasons using Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick. I love how this Revlon lipstick feels. It?s reasonably priced and readily available on Amazon and in drugstores.
The lip colors used for this post were current, but lipstick shades come and go. Use these examples as a general guide and look for a similar shade.
Springs are warm and bright and should look for shades of peach, coral, apricot, and salmon pink. Coral Berry, a pearlized bright salmon-pink, has been a favorite of clients.
Summers are cool and muted and should look for shades of pink, rose, cool red, and mauve. Choose a color that is soft and not overly bright.
Autumns are warm and soft and should choose a shade of peach, apricot, coral, soft orange, warm red, and raisin.
Winters are cool and bright and should choose a shade of pink and cool red. Winters can usually handle the brightest lipstick shades.
To find your most flattering lipstick, experiment and try different lipsticks to choose the right color, formula, and sheen for you.
You can test a lip color virtually before you buy. Many cosmetic companies have a virtual try-on tool where you can upload a photo of yourself to see the lipstick applied.
Don?t be afraid to layer your lipstick to get the perfect shade. This is a great way to wear the lipstick you already have.
If a lip color is too cool for you, apply a warmer color to correct the color. If a lip color is too warm, apply a cool color on top.
If a lip color is too bright, layer on a light nude color on top to soften it.
If a color is too strong, try it in a sheer formula or lip gloss to dilute the color.
Start a lip care routine to keep your lips in top shape so your lipstick always looks fabulous.
Exfoliate your lips to remove dead skin which can cause uneven or patchy lipstick application. Try sugar and a petroleum jelly product to do the trick.
Keep your lips hydrated to feel soft and supple by applying lip balm daily and drinking plenty of water.
Keep your lips soft by moisturizing every night. Try a product like Aquaphor Lip Repair Ointment.
A lip primer or a small dab of foundation will even the color of your lips, keep your lip color true, and keep your lipstick from feathering outside of your lips. Lip primers create a smooth surface for your lipstick, help your color last longer, and add moisture to your lips.
Use a lip liner to outline your lips, correct asymmetrical lips, and make thin lips appear plumper.
Don?t overdo applying your lipstick. Instead of a thick layer, build your color gradually by applying thin layers and blotting in between.
After you apply your lipstick, set your lipstick by pressing your lips against a tissue to remove any excess.
To keep your lipstick off your drinking glass, lick your lips right before drinking.
A long-lasting cream formula is usually best for mature lips since it will hydrate, look soft, and is less likely to feather outside your lips.
Since our lips dry out as we age, matte finishes will make your lips look dry, flat, thin, and older.
Also, avoid sticky lip gloss which can wick up the fine lines around your mouth taking your lip color with it.
If your full-coverage lipstick looks flat and aging, try a less opaque or sheer lipstick that keeps your lips looking moist.
I like lipstick formulas that are moist and creamy. Some of my favorite lipsticks are Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick and Clinique Dramatically Different Lipstick.
